Below are the typical coverages on the home insurance policy.

DWELLING COVERAGE

Will pay for the damages to the structure of your house. You want to make sure that you know what perils (causes of loss) are covered. One of the best types of policies will be a Comprehensive Peril policy with a Replacement Cost settlement option on you dwelling. Flood is not covered by your regular home insurance policy and a flood policy has to be purchased separately through a company specializing in flood insurance.

OTHER STRUCTURES

Will protect the structures on your property that are not attached to your house, like a detached garage, a shed or a fence.

PERSONAL PROPERTY COVERAGE

Will protect your personal belongings in the event that they are damaged or stolen. Make sure that your personal property is covered on a Replacement Cost basis so that there is no deduction for depreciation.

PERSONAL LIABILITY

Covers you if you are liable for any property damage, bodily injury or personal injury claims.

MEDICAL PAYMENTS

Will pay for the medical bills of others who might get injured on your property (but not for your family’s injuries or the injuries of your domestic workers).

LOSS OF USE

Coverage is for the additional living expenses that you incur when you can no longer reside at your dwelling due to a covered loss and have to temporarily relocate (normally pays for the food and lodging).

SEWER & DRAIN BACKUP

An optional coverage that we recommend to all of our clients. It will pay for the damages caused by the water that backs up through the sewer or drain, sump pump, toilet, dishwasher, washing machine or a sink.
